自1996年三国志5，在历经了2年多的等待之后，光荣的新作《三国志Ⅵ》 终于揭开其面纱，出现在我们眼前了。本次的《三国志Ⅵ》由DOS平台转向了Windows平台，因而游戏中的人物和头像也重新进行了绘制。尤其是本作的音乐很精彩，体现了光荣公司一贯精巧完美的制作风格的，可以说是三国志历代以来背景音乐做的最好的一代。笔者对其中的几首美乐，如“浪花淘尽英雄”、“将军凯旋”等至今记忆犹新。
在《三国志Ⅵ》中，野战和城战的概念又恢复了，而且制作者为了体现本作的历史气息，除了4、5两代传统的武将列传外，又增加了群雄年表、英雄回忆的功能。通过群雄年表，玩家可以回顾自己所下过的命令，经历过的事件。而英雄忆旧的功能更可以使你在暴机之余，面对前尘往事而感慨万千。6代更贴近历史的年表功能在其后的各代都有沿用，只是名称和形式不同。内政方面，《三国志Ⅵ》比5代更加简化了，君主不必事事都身体力行，只要将俗务都交给得力的手下即可，算是本系列里面最不重视内政的一代吧。
