भैरव  का अर्थ होता है भय का हरण कर जगत का भरण करने वाला। ऐसा भी कहा जाता है कि भैरव शब्द के तीन अक्षरों में ब्रह्मा, विष्णु और महेश तीनों की शक्ति समाहित है। भैरव  शिव  के गण और पार्वती के अनुचर माने जाते हैं। हिंदू देवताओं में भैरव का बहुत ही महत्व है। इन्हें काशी का कोतवाल कहा जाता है। 
 
भैरव उत्पत्ति : उल्लेख है कि शिव के रूधिर से भैरव की उत्पत्ति हुई। बाद में उक्त रूधिर के दो भाग हो गए- पहला  बटुक भैरव  और दूसरा काल भैरव। मुख्‍यत: दो भैरवों की पूजा का प्रचलन है, एक  काल भैरव  और दूसरे बटुक भैरव।
